Janja Garnbret (born 1999) is, at the start of her twenties, already considered the most successful female competition climber of all times. After entering the World Cup circuit in the tender age of 16, a series of unbelievable success started for Garnbret that hasn’t ended ever since. Her current resume of 8 World Championship titles, ten overall wins and 45 World Cup victories already establish her in a league of her own, only to be out passed by own expectations as her career moves into a bright new chapter with the inclusion of climbing as an Olympic sport.

„I never thought I could be this successful. Sometimes I still think it can’t be real.” Janja Garnbret humbly describes her feelings looking back on her career. “First of all, you need to believe in yourself and secondly you need people who support you to make it all happen. When I started climbing my parents saw that spark in my eye. I hope for many others to find their passion as I did and believe in the potential within them.”
In the consistency of great success, it is difficult to point out a highlight in Garnbret’s career, but the 2019 season is probably the one to shine the brightest. Janja became the first climber ever to win all the competitions of a season, and also the first one ever to take Gold in all three disciplines (Lead, Bouldering, Combined) at a World Championships, which she was able to achieve in Hachioji, Japan.
Among the most prestigious awards in climbing, Garnbret has been named Slovenia’s Sportswomen of the year in 2018 and 2019. As of this date, Janja is at the peak of her sport and looking forward to participating in the first ever Olympic climbing competition.
I try not to worry about being successful, I try to focus on having fun.
It’s not enough to have desire for gold medals, you have to love the process that gets you there.
